Leica M2

Fine art, antiques and decorative art

The Leica M2 is a 35mm rangefinder camera, a simplified sibling to the M3 within Leica's classic M series. It features a 0.72x viewfinder with 35, 50 and 90mm framelines and a quick load mechanism, aimed at photojournalists wanting a lighter, less costly alternative to the M3. It uses the Leica M bayonet mount and is fully mechanical, requiring no battery.

Check the condition of the rangefinder patch for haze or misalignment, the smoothness of the shutter speeds, and whether the light seals and curtains have been serviced. Black paint examples command particular attention to originality of finish, as brassing and repaints affect authenticity.

About Leica

Leica is a name used across several related but distinct businesses originating from the German optics maker Leitz. Leica Geosystems, now part of Hexagon AB, produces surveying instruments, laser levels, total stations and distance meters such as the Rugby and Disto ranges seen at auction. Leica Biosystems and Leica Microsystems supply laboratory and microscopy equipment, while the historic Leica Camera brand remains separate and known for precision cameras.
