Rolex Explorer II

The Explorer II is the Rolex sports watch with a 24 hour hand and a fixed 24 hour bezel, introduced in 1971 for explorers and cave divers who need to tell day from night. The first reference 1655, with its orange hour hand, is nicknamed the Steve McQueen, and it was followed by the 16550, the long running 16570 and the larger 216570 with a 42 mm case. Later references also show a second time zone.

On a used one

Ask for the box, papers and service history, check that the dial, hands, crown and bracelet are original to the watch, and have the movement and case authenticated by a specialist before buying. On the 1655 and early 16550 check that the orange hand and the dial are original, since many were replaced in service.
