Leica IIIa

IT, phones and consumer electronics

The Leica IIIa is a 35 millimetre screw mount rangefinder camera made by Leitz in Wetzlar from 1935. It is the Leica III with a top shutter speed of a thousandth of a second added, and it keeps the separate rangefinder and viewfinder eyepieces and the bottom loading of the earlier cameras. It was made in large numbers before and during the war and was followed by the IIIb, which brought the two eyepieces together. After the war some bodies were assembled in Saarland and are engraved Monté en Sarre, and these are collected in their own right.

We recognise this model across the auction sites and keep every one we see together.

On a used one

A buyer checks the shutter curtains for pinholes and the slow speeds for sticking, and looks at the rangefinder for a clear patch. The serial number dates the body, and the engraving on the top plate should match the stated version.

About Leica

Leica is a name used across several related but distinct businesses originating from the German optics maker Leitz. Leica Geosystems, now part of Hexagon AB, produces surveying instruments, laser levels, total stations and distance meters such as the Rugby and Disto ranges seen at auction. Leica Biosystems and Leica Microsystems supply laboratory and microscopy equipment, while the historic Leica Camera brand remains separate and known for precision cameras.

Questions about Leica IIIa auction prices

What does a Leica IIIa sell for at auction?

In the 11 auction sales we recorded, the middle half fetched EUR 400 to EUR 2.000, with a median of about EUR 500. These are rounded hammer prices in euros, before the buyer's premium and VAT; what one machine fetches depends on its year, hours and condition, which the table shows next to each sale.

How many Leica IIIa auction sales are on record?

11 sales with a published hammer price, closed between 31 May 2023 and 7 October 2026, on 8 auction sites in 4 countries. 9 more closed without a sale.

Is a Leica IIIa at auction now?

Not at the moment. The lots of this model that come to auction appear on this page while they are open, and every sale that closes with a price is added to the table.

Are the Leica IIIa hammer prices free to read?

The oldest sale of every model is free to read, and so is every hammer price under the site's floor. The other 10 hammer prices of the Leica IIIa open with an account: every sale of the model for a year, or one sale on its own.

Hammer prices are what the auction house recorded when the lot closed, before the buyer's premium, in the currency of the sale. A sale listed on a house's own site and on its platform counts once. Doubt a figure? Open the sale and its listing is linked there. How prices are recorded.
