Leica M6

IT, phones and consumer electronics

The Leica M6 is a 35 millimetre rangefinder camera with a built in light meter, introduced by Leica in 1984 as the successor to the M4-P. It keeps the mechanical cloth shutter of the earlier M cameras and adds a through the lens meter read by two arrows in the viewfinder, with frame lines for 28 to 135 millimetre lenses. The M6 TTL of 1998 added flash metering and a larger shutter dial, and the model was replaced by the aperture priority M7 in 2002. Leica reissued the M6 in 2022, and the classic version is the most sought after film M for everyday use.

On a used one

A buyer checks the meter against a known reference, the rangefinder patch for flare and brightness, and the shutter for even exposure at the fast speeds. Many M6 cameras have been used hard, so the condition of the vulcanite and the top plate shows how they were treated.

About Leica

Leica is a name used across several related but distinct businesses originating from the German optics maker Leitz. Leica Geosystems, now part of Hexagon AB, produces surveying instruments, laser levels, total stations and distance meters such as the Rugby and Disto ranges seen at auction. Leica Biosystems and Leica Microsystems supply laboratory and microscopy equipment, while the historic Leica Camera brand remains separate and known for precision cameras.

Are the Leica M6 hammer prices free to read?

The oldest sale of every model is free to read, and so is every hammer price under the site's floor. The other 16 hammer prices of the Leica M6 open with an account: every sale of the model for a year, or one sale on its own.

Hammer prices are what the auction house recorded when the lot closed, before the buyer's premium, in the currency of the sale. A sale listed on a house's own site and on its platform counts once. Doubt a figure? Open the sale and its listing is linked there. How prices are recorded.
